Toshiba’s latest 18TB HDDs receive Adaptec® HBA and RAID Adapter Qualification

Assured compatibility of MG09 Series enables more widespread implementation of these FC-MAMR units

Düsseldorf, Germany, 10 August 2021 – Toshiba Electronics Europe GmbH (TEE) announces the successful completion of compatibility testing between Toshiba’s new 18TB, 3.5-inch MG09 Series and Microchip storage adapters. The operation of these hard disk drives (HDDs) is now confirmed on all common Adaptec® host bus adapters (HBAs) and redundant array of independent disk (RAID) adapters from Microchip. 

HBAs and RAID adapters connect enterprise HDDs to the server, enabling the construction of advanced network architectures. Their smooth interplay ensures the functionality and operational stability of enterprise and cloud storage systems.

“We are very pleased that our long-term cooperation with Microchip made the qualification of the MG09 generation with their Smart Storage adapters so soon after the market launch. Companies using Adaptec adapters can install Toshiba’s 18TB MG09 enterprise drives, for proven interoperability ,” says Rainer Kaese, Senior Manager Business Development Storage Products at TEE.

The confirmed compatibility of the MG09 Series refers to SAS 12GB/s MG09SCA18TE/A and the SATA 6GB/s versions MG09ACA18TE/A models. Tests were carried out on the new PCIe Gen 4 24G SAS/SATA/NVMe HBA and RAID tri-mode models, the HBA 1100 series, the SmartRAID 3100 series and the still widely used RAID predecessor, Series 8 . Not only were the basic functionality and compatibility of the interface checked, but  hot-plug tests, power on tests and reboot tests were performed, as well Long-term stability was also confirmed via an extended duration test. The MG09 hard drives have thus qualified for entry on Microchip’s compatibility list.

The recently launched MG09 Series is based on Toshiba’s proprietary third-generation, 9-disk Helium-sealed design and incorporates game-changing flux control – microwave assisted magnetic recording (FC-MAMR) technology. With 12.5% more capacity than the previous 16TB models, the 18TB MG09 Series drives are compatible with the widest range of applications and operating systems. 

Thorough compatibility testing conducted by Microchip follows on from tests that the company undertook on Toshiba’s Enterprise Capacity HDDs (models MG04 to MG08) and the Enterprise Performance HDD series (AL12 to  AL15) in the past.
