Toshiba launches Canvio Ready portable hard drive with partly recycled-material top cover

Thoughtful design combines improved grip with a top cover made from 65% recycled material while retaining a simple plug-and-play experience

Düsseldorf, Germany, 15 September 2026 – Toshiba Electronics Europe GmbH (Toshiba) announces the new Canvio Ready 2.5-inch[1] portable external hard disk drive (HDD). The redesigned enclosure features a timeless appearance with grip-enhancing ribbed detailing and the top cover is manufactured using 65% recycled material. The update retains the simple plug-and-play operation and dependable portable storage  that users expect from Canvio Ready.

Available in capacities of up to 4TB[2], Canvio Ready provides ample space for everyday digital life. Whether backing up family photos, carrying important files or storing a growing media library, the HDD offers a straightforward way to keep content close at hand. Users can simply connect the drive to their computer and start saving, with no software installation or setup required.

The Canvio Ready is supplied with a USB Type-A to Micro-B cable. USB 3.2 Gen 1 technology delivers transfer speeds of up to 5Gbit/s while maintaining backwards compatibility with USB 2.0 devices. USB-powered operation also makes portable storage simple without the need for an external power supply, and the HDD is pre-formatted for Microsoft Windows so users can get started immediately. Mac systems are supported following reformatting.

Renowned for its proven reliability, the Canvio Ready continues to deliver dependable performance. Toshiba’s ramp load design helps protect the drive mechanism during transport, while integrated shock sensors provide additional protection against excessive shock events.

“The new Canvio Ready reflects our approach to continuous product refinement, preserving the performance, reliability and convenience users expect from Toshiba,” says Larry Martinez-Palomo, Vice President of the Storage Products Division at Toshiba Electronics Europe. “The redesigned enclosure provides a more confident grip, while incorporating recycled material gives customers another opportunity to make a more environmentally conscious purchasing choice.”

The new Canvio Ready with 1TB, 2TB and 4TB capacities will be available starting Q4.

[1] “2.5-inch“ means the form factor of HDDs. They do not indicate the drive‘s physical size.

[2] One Terabyte (TB) means one trillion bytes. Total available capacity will vary based on the operating environment, and your results and storage capacity will vary accordingly. A computer operating system, however, reports storage capacity using powers of 2 for the definition of 1 GB = 230 = 1 073 741 824 bytes and 1 TB = 240 = 1 099 511 627 776 bytes and therefore shows less storage capacity.
